Advance Local Launches 23 Apps Across Three Major Markets with Pugpig and X-CAGO

X-CAGO’s custom workflow seamlessly processes all Advance Local publications, supplements, and service directories, delivering pristine clipped content directly to the newly launched Pugpig apps.

The Project

Advance Local Media is one of the largest media groups in the United States, which operates the leading news and information companies in more than 20 cities, reaching 52+ million people monthly with their quality, real-time journalism and community engagement.

Dominic Easter, Commercial Director at Pugpig said: “Creating an engaging app experience was central to the Advance Local team’s strategy to drive their enhanced digital subscriptions model. Thanks to our partnership with X-CAGO, the digital editions provide a totally frictionless experience for their readers and we’ve also helped reduce the workload for the Advance Local newsroom. We’re really proud to have worked alongside X-CAGO for yet another fantastic launch and look forward to seeing what’s next.

The Solution: PUGPIG Bolt and X-CAGO

For Advance Local, X-CAGO created a custom workflow to ingest all content for processing, with all parties working closely together to meet a tight deadline.

Features on the applications include:

  • Background push notification so users wake up with the downloaded issue
  • Read a digital replica of the daily newspaper
  • Play the daily interactive puzzles
  • Digital-only evening editions
  • Obituaries pulled directly into the app in digital format
  • Save articles for later reading

Specifically for The Oregonian, Pugpig has used its Timeline Layouts functionality to breathe new life into the afternoon edition’s front page, allowing for twice-daily updates of the day’s top stories and the flexibility to update morning stories in the afternoon edition.
