CLIPWORX
X-CAGO’s software ‘ClipWorX’ enables publishers to capture, store and distribute content from newspapers, magazines, books, and CMS efficiently and securely into a Content Repository ‘Archive ExPress’. This enables publishers to monetise content by repurposing, regrouping and distributing content through multiple channels.
ClipWorX is the most advanced press clipping software solution on the market. It efficiently automates the production and distribution of clippings from newspapers, magazines, and other printed matter.
This sophisticated software system enables clients to produce and if wanted reformat articles into clippings which can then be printed as well as be posted to a website or electronically distributed in different formats, such as Adobe PDF, JPG, TIFF and XML. ClipWorX produces high-quality electronic clippings in a unique way that makes them much easier to read, distribute, archive and retrieve than clippings produced by conventional systems.
A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS
X-CAGO’s ClipWorX software has been developed as an efficient, economical, digital technology-based alternative to producing press clippings the old-fashioned way (with knives, scissors, glue, and photocopiers). Also functioning as a replacement for less efficient software solutions, ClipWorX has a powerful set of tools for capturing, processing, analysing and storing mission-critical information from the printed media.
With a ClipWorX-based production environment, clients reduce overhead and production costs while accessing more timely and accurate information, higher quality results and increased knowledge. ClipWorX efficiently handles large volumes of inputs (content) with significantly increased delivery speeds.
CLIENT APPLICATIONS
Many of the world’s largest Press Clipping Agencies use the ClipWorX solution platform to run and optimise their businesses. Organisations, large and small including corporations, the legal profession, financial institutions, government instrumentalities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), associations and unions that maintain their own reference and research libraries benefit from the capabilities of ClipWorX. Content including articles and other important information can be made more accessible and with greater speed. Public relations, media monitoring, and marketing communications activities are greatly enhanced as ClipWorX delivers the fastest and highest quality solution for creating, distributing, archiving and retrieving digital press clipping collections.
STATE-OF THE ART SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE
All of X-CAGO’s software products are developed with the latest generation of Object-oriented programming (OOP) software design. X-CAGO’s guiding development principle is to create entirely open software applications, cleanly divided into autonomous, distributable, multithreaded components allowing for a variety of configurations, without any customisation requirements. This sound architectural foundation of ClipWorX provides benefits at several levels.
SEAMLESS INTEGRATION INTO EXISTING PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTS
All interfacing with ClipWorX takes place at the file system level, never at a less open or tangible level. X-CAGO’s software solutions do not have any direct “locks” into proprietary scanning equipment or proprietary archiving and distribution solutions. This enables clients to efficiently integrate ClipWorX within their process management systems including those components that are not related to the clipping function. No one single tool within the ClipWorX software suite communicates directly with a client’s database. A turnkey solution ensures there is a clean, open database layer built around the ClipWorX tools, providing flexibility and ease of integration.
By way of illustration, every single ClipWorX module can be linked to a factory with a machine producing one individual component for manufacture of an end product. When individual machines work in harmony and exchange information, they are able to design, implement and maintain a workflow with optimal efficiency in the completion of the final product. Similarly, all ClipWorX modules can run on a single workstation or as distributed components on multiple workstations in Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN). When a “factory” is small, there is no need for elaborate management logistics. However, when it grows, these processes can easily be integrated into a client’s production environment.
MODULAR SOLUTIONS
X-CAGO recognises that sometimes a staged approach to development is preferable to a full option solution. Accordingly, the X-CAGO philosophy is for solutions specifically tailored to meet clients exact needs cognisant of budgetary requirements and return on investment. Clients can start with the basic modules and add other modules in the future as required.
EASY MODIFICATIONS
Where a client has a specific requirement that is not already part of the X-CAGO solution set, the system architecture permits trouble-free, cost-effective modifications and additions. The fact that X-CAGO’s software can be modified makes updates and further developments faster and less costly to execute, ensuring that a client’s investment in X-CAGO’s software and products is fully leveraged and supported by future enhancements.
-
“Capturing” is the first step in the process – a generic term X-CAGO uses to describe the capturing of a digital file or scanning of original paper or microfilm– whether all or part of a newspaper or magazine. The graphical user interface, specifically designed for the processing of captured print media enables the ability to quickly and easily work with large size images and attach keyword and other workflow-based meta information to the captured images. Most importantly, X-CAGO’s technology allows the creation of full-depth grayscale and colour files, eliminating poor picture quality while producing razor-sharp copies of captured text. Grayscale values are used throughout the entire process – from scanning to clipping to optical character recognition (OCR) and printing. The photos and graphics in X-CAGO’s clippings are therefore true grayscale- not emulated grayscale as with traditional clipping systems. This capability eliminates interference pattern problems such as moiré (a rippling effect) when rescaling clips.
X-CAGO’s grayscale technology is also very effective in optimising optical character recognition input – significantly increasing the output quality and accuracy of the OCR process.
-
The second step is “Segmentation”. After a newspaper or magazine page has been captured, X-CAGO’s software segments the articles with its patented Automatic Intelligent Recognition Technology (AIRT). This technology is the result of years of cooperation, research and development with X-CAGO’s development partner, Océ. Captured images of magazines, newspapers, journals, and newsletters are segmented into constituent parts like headlines, text blocks, pictures, and captions. Furthermore, this reliable and intelligent technology determines which of these blocks compose an article as well as determining the reading order of the article. With segmentation, clipping an article takes no more than a simple mouse click on the desired article. To clip all articles on a segmented page, ClipWorX will extract all of them at once and output them to target pages.
-
The third step is “Layout”. This involves fitting the clipped article onto a target page. In conventional manual clipping, often an article would have to be cut into several pieces and perhaps even scaled down to fit on the target page. X-CAGO’s ClipWorX software however automatically reformats the article, fitting it onto the target page without sacrificing readability and avoiding all the physical labour of a manual clipping operation.
The original layout of the article need not be lost with such an approach. If desired, the software will add a thumbnail depicting a miniature copy of the full-page scan with the original layout of the article highlighted. The size and resolution of thumbnails are easily configured to meet the exact needs of a client’s readers.
-
The final steps are “Finishing” and “Output”. The clippings produced are written in Adobe PostScript®, providing the best possible print quality. The software can also create Adobe® PDF documents, generated according to a client’s quality specifications.
Source details can quickly be generated and added to each and every article. Source information includes newspaper or magazine name, date, page number, subject, title, author, keywords, etc. By deploying grayscale technology and using blocks of an article from the determined reading order, X-CAGO’s OcrWorX™ is capable of producing the most accurate OCR results if scanned from hardcopy originals or microfilm possible. OcrWorX can also produce flexible XML output, with customisable tags.
